The Male Voices Voices Message Board
In Praise of Jane
Austen
The Final Month—July 2002
9-11
The Bulletin Board was inactivated on July 18, 2002, the anniversary of Jane
Austen's death. This followed four and a half years of lively conversations with
the community. I list here the last month of that activity for the benefit of
Internet archeologists and crime-scene investigators. For those of you who would
like to explore the remaining parts of the web site, here are links to the Table of Contents, the
Index and Archive
(a navigational guide), and an introduction and explanation for you at the Home Page. The community
still keeps in touch in the Male Voices
Newsletter.

- 7/18/02 The Meister - Jane Austen passed away in the early
morning hours on this date in 1817. Perhaps we should celebrate even that day,
which, like her birth date, only bounds the time of an excellent woman who
lived a exemplary life. Our Lady was a great artist who has enriched our
culture as few others have. Yes, let us be happy. Everything must have an end
as well as a beginning, and not just the good and worthy. And so I also can
draw attention to the demise of something not so good nor so worthy: I will
take down this Bulletin Board on August 1. The web site will remain open for
another year, but the Bulletin Board will be abandoned in two weeks time. In
the time that remains to us, let us proceed as we always have done. I thought
to thank all the thoughtful contributors who have visited this Board but found
that the list was too long and, more importantly, that I risked leaving
someone's name off the list that belonged there. So, I will simply say, "thank
you,"—to all of you, thank you so very much.

This web site was introduced on December 16th, 1997 because that
was the 222nd anniversary of Jane Austen's birth. This date was also
the 227th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven.
